Charles Wallace has organized youth conference for past 12 years

For Charles Wallace, a network support analyst at Georgia Ports, learning to serve others was something instilled in him from an early age. When Wallace moved back to Savannah from Statesboro and joined the GPA’s Information Technology department in 2007, he wanted to make a difference in the community. He said community outreach is the cornerstone of his faith.

Friendship inspires organization to help others pursue passions

GPA crane operator, partner facilitate outdoor activities for physically challenged individuals

For nearly two decades, Kerry Terrell and Jason Beard have been heading out before the sun rises to stake out a prime turkey hunting spot. But, there was a time in Beard’s life when he wondered if he’d still be able to pursue his passion. Beard’s injuries from a diving accident fractured his vertebrae, making him a quadriplegic.

Terrell, a crane operator at Georgia Ports Authority, recalls the first time he heard about the man who would become one of his best friends. Terrell, an award-winning turkey caller, was participating in a competition when he was asked to help a wheelchair-bound man call in a turkey.

Nearly six months after Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch unveiled the Y.E.S. (Youth learning Equipment and Safety) Program, the first hires in the workforce initiative are on their way to becoming part of GPA’s 1,300-person strong team of trained logistics professionals.
